West China Hospital, Chengdu: a guide for international patients

What West China Hospital in Chengdu really is: its scale, its departments, its equipment and its research standing — and the two service models, standard care and the International Medical Department, you can choose between.

The healthcare environment

A high-volume system built on public teaching hospitals

China's best hospitals are large public university medical centres. They treat enormous numbers of patients every day, which produces deep clinical experience — and also means a visit is fast, efficient and quite different from a Western hospital.

  • Volume creates expertise. Senior surgeons at top hospitals may perform several times the annual case volume of their Western peers.
  • Equipment is current. Leading centres operate the same imaging, robotic and minimally invasive platforms used in Europe and North America.
  • Drug costs have fallen. National price negotiations and volume-based procurement have sharply reduced the cost of many imported and oncology medicines.
  • The system is different. Real-name registration, appointment slots, mobile payment and Chinese-language paperwork — this is where a coordinator matters.

Sichuan University West China Hospital

One of China's largest and most respected academic medical centres

West China Hospital sits in central Chengdu. It is part of Sichuan University — a Double First-Class university — and combines an enormous general hospital with specialist institutes that are recognised leaders in their fields.

Consistently ranked among China's top general hospitals

In the widely cited Fudan Institute Hospital Rankings, West China Hospital has held a position in the top two general hospitals in mainland China for many consecutive years.

Depth across many specialties

Anaesthesiology, radiology, pathology, general and hepatobiliary surgery, neurosurgery, urology, rehabilitation, geriatrics, emergency and critical care, nuclear medicine and clinical pharmacy are all nationally recognised.

Stomatology and oral medicine leadership

West China's dental school is the birthplace of modern dentistry in China and is regularly placed first nationally in stomatology in specialty rankings — a strong option for oral, maxillofacial and implant work.

International medical centre

The hospital's international and VIP outpatient services offer shorter queues, English-speaking staff and appointment-based scheduling — a practical route for visitors who cannot spend days waiting.

International research collaboration

Faculty publish and collaborate with institutions worldwide, and many senior clinicians trained or held fellowships abroad — so international guidelines are familiar ground.

A group of affiliated hospitals

Beyond the main campus, West China's affiliated hospitals — including its women's and children's hospital and dental hospital — broaden the range of cases we can place.

Please note

Rankings, bed counts and departmental strengths are summarised from publicly available sources and change over time. We confirm the current position of a department, and whether a specific professor accepts international patients, before recommending it to you.

Experts and departments

Where the expertise actually sits

The hospital's senior clinicians are concentrated in a small number of very large specialty departments. Knowing their scale tells you which of them can genuinely move fast on a complex case.

1,010 senior-title experts

Consultants and professors holding a senior professional title — of whom 370 are doctoral supervisors and 520 are master's supervisors.

A teaching hospital's academic base

As the clinical school of Sichuan University, the hospital trains physicians from across the country, with 67 doctoral and 68 master's degree programmes across four first-level disciplines.

Academicians and national teaching awards

The faculty includes a Chinese Academy of Sciences academician, national-level teaching masters and national teaching teams.

Scale of selected departments

Examples of how large a single specialty can be. Bed and staff counts are taken from the departments' own published introductions.

Equipment

Diagnostic and surgical platforms

The hospital operates one of the largest equipment inventories in China, with a total value of roughly US$310 million.

  • 11 MRI scanners and 11 spiral CT scanners across the campuses, covering 3T MRI and high-end CT work.
  • 6 linear accelerators, including an MR-guided radiotherapy system for high-precision image-guided treatment.
  • PET/CT, PET/MR and SPECT/CT for tumour staging and neurological and cardiac imaging.
  • 2 medical cyclotrons, producing short-lived tracers on site for molecular imaging.
  • Da Vinci robotic surgical systems and a gamma knife for minimally invasive surgery and intracranial stereotactic treatment.
  • More than 100 international-standard operating theatres, running close to 500 surgical procedures on a typical day.
Research

Research output that keeps the clinical teams current

Funding and publication are the clearest public signal of whether a hospital's protocols track the international front line.

  • 4,400 SCI papers in 2025 — first in China for many consecutive years.
  • 278 National Natural Science Foundation grants in 2025 — first among all Chinese medical institutions for nine consecutive years.
  • STEM ranking: first in China for ten consecutive years.
  • Fudan hospital rankings: first in China on research score for fourteen consecutive years.
  • Nature Index: first among Chinese hospitals, 19th in the world.
  • More than 130 government science and technology awards in five years, including a second-class National Natural Science Award.

Where these numbers come from

Figures are drawn from the hospital's public 2025 profile, departmental introductions and research statistics, and cover the hospital group including its three directly managed campuses. Beds, staffing, equipment counts and research output change from year to year; we re-check them with the relevant department before quoting anything to you.

Practical realities

What a hospital day actually looks like for a foreign patient

Knowing these five things in advance removes most of the stress of a first visit.

  • Real-name registration. A passport is required to create the hospital record; we prepare the details in advance so you only sign.
  • Appointment slots, not walk-ins. Specialists are booked by time slot online; popular professors fill one week ahead.
  • Cashless counters. You need to set up Alipay and link a bank card in advance.
  • Fast results, compact window. Many imaging reports are ready the same day, which is why a well-planned trip can combine consultation, testing and a treatment decision in days rather than months.
  • Documents in Chinese. Discharge summaries and reports are issued in Chinese; we provide a translated version your home doctor can use.
Two ways to be treated

Standard care and the International Medical Department

The same hospital and the same specialists, but two very different service models and price levels. Switch between the tabs to see what each one actually gives you, then compare them side by side below.

Standard care

The ordinary outpatient route: you drive every step, and it costs the least

Chinese public hospitals are built for volume. Registration, payment, tests and reports are separate steps you handle yourself, in Chinese, among very large numbers of patients. It is fast and remarkably cheap — but it is not a concierge service.

What the service consists of

  • Registration per item, waiting in the general queue
  • Consultation in Chinese, with only a few minutes of physician time
  • You book tests, collect reports and pay at the counter yourself
  • Multi-bed wards, shared bathrooms and fixed ward routines
  • English translation and accompaniment are not provided

What the experience feels like

  • Extremely high patient volume; expect queues even with an appointment
  • Popular professor slots are released in batches and go quickly
  • Every charge is published item by item, so costs stay predictable and low
  • Clinically you are seen by the same departments and senior specialists
  • You need a clear plan, patience and usually your own translator

Who it suits

Patients with a tight budget, a clear diagnosis already in hand, some Mandarin or a companion who speaks it, and the confidence to manage appointments and paperwork themselves.

Price comparison

What the same service costs in each tier

Indicative ranges in US dollars, converted at roughly 7.1 CNY per USD. Both columns come from the same published hospital price list; the international column adds the premium service charge.

Item Standard care (USD) International Medical Department (USD)
Standard outpatient registration$1 – $7$42 – $140
Senior specialist (professor) outpatient$14 – $42$70 – $210
CT scan (plain)$28 – $85$70 – $170
MRI scan$70 – $210$140 – $420

Laparoscopic gallbladder removal (total)$2,100 – $4,900$4,200 – $9,900
Medical translator and accompanimentNot provided — arrange your ownIncluded in the service

Figures are indicative only. International Medical Department charges are set by the hospital and typically run about two to five times standard rates — the gap is widest on registration fees and room charges, and narrowest on surgery. Only a written quotation for your own case is authoritative, and we add no margin to any hospital charge.
